Brooklyn’s own bloodsports just released their debut album “Anything Can Be a Hammer” via Good English Records, and we had the opportunity to see their record release show at Union Pool this past Saturday.

Immediately my jaw was on the floor. This was a very loud show in the best way possible; everyone on stage has their own way of pulling you in. Throughout the show I was glued to the stage, I couldn’t look away, and if I did it was to send a text to every number in my phone geeking over how good they were. I watched the show alone, so I needed to let the world know what I was seeing.

I admittedly didn’t know all too much about bloodsports before attending the show, I had seen friends post about them before, and knew they were catching some buzz, so I thought it would be a cool show to attend and write about for Small Talks, but I didn’t expect to almost accidentally stumble into a band that’s quickly going to become my most listened of the year. “Anything Can Be a Hammer” is reminiscent of a lot of my favorite bands (Unwound, Title Fight, Deeper, Etc.). I was bound to like it from the jump, but it has come at the most perfect time: it’s finally starting to get a little chilly outside, it feels right to have this album playing in my AirPods.

I left the show feeling rejuvenated, and very excited about music, which is something I can’t say i’ve felt in a long time, oddly enough. I feel very lucky I was able to attend such a special night of music – and I cannot stress this enough – if you have the chance to see bloodsports live, go do it, it might change your life.
