Artist Feature: Rebounder

Small Talks (Emma): So first off, describe your sound to someone who has never listened to

Rebounder before.

Dylan: You know what’s funny is people keep asking this question and well, I feel like professional artists have an answer that they always go with but I have yet to come up with that, so for now “Arctic Monkeys covering a Lykee Li song”. I’ll rock with that now.

Emma: So how has the tour with Joy Again been so far?

Dylan: Tour has been amazing so far, it’s been so much fun, they’re so nice. Springfield Missouri was sold out, most of these places we’ve been visiting for the first time, like this is my first time in Atlanta and our drummer is from Atlanta. It’s just been great, the shows have been super cool, venues have been super cool.

Emma: So do you have any like, crazy tour stories so far?

Dylan: Nothing that I would want to commit to public record, but we’ve been staying at some pretty shady hotels so we’ve been doing a lot of sleeping in shifts because there have been parties and fights breaking out so we try to stay out of that. That hasn’t been too cool, but for us we spend so much time in New York that just driving around and getting to see the country has been kind of crazy in and of itself. There hasn’t really been a specific moment where we were like “wow that’s crazy”. Well, there was this one thing. So we have this neon sign that says “I love New York” that we’ve been hanging up at every show, and we had it made in LA, the guy told us to come back at 9:30 the next day, so I sent Noah to go get it and Noah shows up and the guy is like, “I need another hour”, next day rolls around, it isn’t ready, and then finally as we are about to leave LA, the sign is done and finally we were able to take our sign and run. We showed up every day to this guys shop, “Call Saul” he leaned into the fact that his name was Saul because of Better Call Saul. The sign is very cool though.

Emma: What’s been your favorite show so far?

Dylan: Springfield, MI was amazing, it was sold out and I had never been, so it was really cool. LA was stand out because we played a really cool warehouse downtown and all of our friends showed up so that was super cool.

Emma: Do you have a dream artist you would want to play with?

Dylan: As far as artists go that are currently out there aren’t a ton…

Emma: It can be artists that aren’t currently here anymore!

Dylan: Well I’m trying to make it happen, Nancy Sinatra isn’t really playing any shows anymore but we’re a huge fan of hers, Lykee Li is about to go on tour and we’re big fans of hers so that would be cool, I’m a pretty big fan of Jack White’s, I should just say the same artists in every interview so that way eventually they’ll see it. Parcels, Phoenix, hit us up!

Emma: So how did Rebounder come to be?

Dylan: I had been writing and producing songs my entire life and so had my brother, and we did a lot of hired touring musician stuff, playing with different bands going on tour, I toured North America, Noah toured the world, playing keyboard, drums, whatever. So the main goal was to get good at recording our own songs so we could just do it, and then finally I got a studio in Greenpoint, I quit everything I was doing and I was like “I’m going to learn how to produce my own songs” and I spent all of my time on it. “Japanese Posters” was one of the first songs I produced, and then when it came to start actually playing live shows, Zack Kantor came in, we went to preschool together, and Cobey was introduced to me by a mutual friend in Atlanta, he was moving to New York and was looking for a band to play with and we had a position we needed to fill, so it all came together pretty smoothly. Our first show we played together opening up for a band called “The Neighbourhood” so that was cool, then we were just kind of like, fuck it, this is what we’re going to do for the rest of our lives. I feel like a lot of our past experiences are really coming to play now and it’s pretty cool to finally be doing it on our own. We’ve all been apart of a lot of different bands and been on tour a lot but this is our first time doing our own thing.

*Noah enters the room*

Dylan: Noah has joined the chat.

Emma: What music have you guys been digging lately?

Noah: Papooz, Parcel’s, Lady Gaga always.

Dylan: We listen to a lot of Gaga in the car, early stuff, Fame Monster EP era.

Emma: As you should! Are there any movies you guys have seen lately that you guys loved?

Dylan: There’s this movie called “Hot Rock” it’s a 1972 heist movie that blew my mind.

Emma: BRB putting that on my letterboxd watchlist.

Noah: What’s that one movie…

Dylan: Three Days of the Condor, we love heist movies, spies, New York, all of that stuff.

Emma: So you guys have seen Good Time then right?

Dylan: Oh yeah of course.

Noah: Maybe the Safdie Brothers’ best film

Emma: That’s what I’m saying! I was literally just saying that the other day. I feel like it’s better than Uncut Gems.

Noah: It’s a bit of a hot take but I think you’re right.

Dylan: We went to the same middle school as those guys just 20 years apart. People have actually said we are like if the Safdie brothers had a band.

Noah: Oh yeah, I've definitely heard that before.

Emma: What can people expect from Rebounder in the future?

Dylan: We just finished a bunch of new songs so we’ll start rolling those out, we’ve got some videos we’re sitting on as well, and then we’ll release our first proper project. Hopefully we’ll be going on our own tour soon too. So ultimately a lot of touring, a lot of new music, because historically we haven’t toured that much so we decided to change that. Noah and I produced these songs that are coming out, Danny from the Neighbourhood mixed them, Noah has a solo project coming out so he’s been working on that. There’s a lot of cool stuff to come in the future so it’s cool that a couple of people are paying attention.

Emma: Any last words?

Dylan: We’re having a really great time live, laugh, loving our way across this wonderful country of ours and we hope to see you soon.

Noah: Slayyyyy!
