Zoe Ko is a name that's soon to be on everyone's radar as the new alt-pop princess of New York. Her newest single Get Out (released 12/15/22) is sure to get stuck in your head, with catchy lyrics (that are all too relatable), fiery vocals and explosive guitars crafting a tune that will enter your spotify wrapped in no time. I had the chance to sit down with Zoe and discuss her song writing process, spotify wrapped, future goals and more.

How did the idea for “Get out” come to be? What was your main inspiration behind the song?
To be honest “Get Out” didn’t come from an idea but rather desperation for myself to finally stop thinking about this dumb boy. I’m 5 months into being single for the first time since senior year of high school so I’m slowly learning and navigating the single life. I haven’t had the feeling of a crush taking up so much emotional and mental space in a long time so I wanted to make a song that forced them out of my head.

What did the song writing process look like?
All I knew going into the room with Huck (co writer and producer) was that the chorus was going to be the phrase “Get Out” sung over and over. I told Huck the overall vibe and as he started building the song’s soundscape I spam typed lyrics into my IPhone notes page as if I was summarizing exactly what happened and how I felt to my best friend at 3 am. Then we synthesized all the lyrics and melodies into the final version.
What did your spotify wrapped look like this year (no cheating)? Do you take inspiration from any artists you listen to on the daily?
My top artists were, 1. Holly Humberstone 2. Baby Queen 3. Conan Gray 4. Wolf Alice 5. Wet Leg !!!!! Obsessed with so many more artists too. Holly, Baby Queen and Wet Leg have been my biggest inspirations lately and have really reconnected me back to my music and who I want to be as an artist.
You live in New York currently, do you think living in the city has had any impact on your sound?
New York has such a massive impact on me and my sound. Every time I stare out the subway window I can’t help but start writing. I find New York one of the most freeing and exciting places to be in the world so it constantly makes me want to create and push my music to be out of the box. There’s an overwhelming feeling of sonder in the city, which helps me make my music more relatable and universal I believe.
Lastly, what are your plans for the future? Any short term/Long term goals? Anything for fans to look forward to?
My plan for the future is to keep following this crazy dream and releasing music and visuals that feel 1000% me. Short term goals are to be able to release music every 6-8 weeks super consistently and do a collaboration with another cool artist. Long term goal is to release a project in 2023 and go on tour with a sick artist! My fans (aka friends) can look forward to gifts in the mail from me in 2023, more music, live shows, and more video content!! :)
